Before you have any work done, it would make good sense to get the basement checked for damp or possible damp issues in the future. Hopefully, there are no problems but if you discover a damp area then it’s likely to eventually come through and cause damage and would be a bigger problem and spoil your efforts.
Getting rid of damp is expensive but in the long run, it could save you a lot of future problems and money. Same goes for leaks from pipes; ensure the pipe work is in good order and not
corroded. Again all extra expense but in long term, could be a saving.

A wise investment would be an air humidifier. Due to their low elevation, basements often have air circulation problems which may result in mold and mildew to form.
Basement ideas
Basements often have generous space and it is a good idea is to build a playroom for the kids and their friends. How good to know your kids have a safe place to play.

How about an adult games room if you will excuse the expression? Perhaps a big boy’s room with pool/billiard table, dart board, and why not a drinks station or a bar?
If you’re a budding musician then basements are the best place to set up your own little studio or rehearsal area. Soundproofing can be fitted if you really wanted to let it rip, there will be no better location in the house than the basement.
If you’re the oldest or youngest swingers in town and love to throw parties then why not set up your basement as a party area. Fit a bar and place a good music system in there.
Storage and more
Of course in most cases, basements are simply storage areas but it’s a bit of a shame to waste the space down there and let it become little more than a household warehouse of surplus objects. I’m sure basements were invented for better things than that.
A simple and obvious idea is to simply increase your living space and make a whole new living area for the family or even a large bedroom. This all gives you back space in the other part of the house.
